Round 9 Review – MUWFC Win With 10 Players

MUWFC have recorded a character building 3-0 win over Adelaide University, playing 60 minutes with only 10 women on the park.

There was misfortune from the word go with Shelly Kuhar having to be replaced after only 3 mins by Jess Signoriello.

However that didn’t affect how MUWFC started the match, controlling possession and creating chances galore inside the opening 30 minutes.

Chrissy Panagaris got the scoring underway after just 8 minutes, getting on the end of a Stella Rigon long ball, burning her defender with trademark blistering pace, and slotting home into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 with her 12th goal of the season.

11 minutes later, Laura Stockdale got on the end of what was a magnificent team goal to double the advantage. Ebony Kyriacou played Donna Cockayne down the line, who cut a great ball back into the area. Kristy Moore used all her experience, and dummied for Stockdale who made no mistake with the finish, and made it 2-0 inside 20 minutes.

The 30 minute horror story for Adelaide University was rounded off when, from a corner, Uni Captain Laura Johns, under immense pressure, turned the ball into her own net to make the score 3-0.

Then on 38 minutes, a moment which could have turned the game on its head. MUWFC goalkeeper Hunter Strudwick was given her marching orders with a red card. A long ball played by Uni seemed innocuous when Strudwick came rushing off her line to clear, however she mistimed it badly, halting the Uni attack and leaving referee Isabella Blaess with no option but to send her to the dressing room for an early shower. Jess Signoriello, who had come on early for Shelly Kuhar, was the unlucky one to make way for Olivia Beer to make her debut WNPL appearance in goal for MUWFC.

However playing with 1 player less didn’t hinder the team, still managing to create two more chances late in the half but just lacking the finishing touch.

The second half started with Adelaide University enjoying more possesion with the extra player, however they found it tough creating anything meaningful against a well organised and disciplined MUWFC side. Laura Stockdale was buzzing around in midfield, Isabella Scalzi and Ebony Kyriacou dealt with and cleaned up everything up at the back, Ness Reed held and dictated terms in midfield, while Ellie Bills was her ever industrious self, running box to box and not giving her former side a chance to settle.

Donna Cockayne and Chrissy Panagaris were constant threats on the break while doing their defensive duties superbly with the numerical disadvantage.

Adelaide University had a chance via a goal mouth scramble, but they were cleared and dealt with well by the solid and desperate MUWFC defence, in particular a great goal line clearance by Captain Stella Rigon.

As the game wore on we continued to create further chances, most notably Chrissy Panagaris putting a 1 on 1 wide after running half the length of the field.

In the end, it was a good resounding win, playing the best part of an hour with 1 player down, the experience and character of this group really shone through, recording a 3-0 win, and continuing the chase for the Premiership.
